Other than the lack of any packaging (just 100 tracks dumped in a shipping box with no branding, labels, manufacturer’s name, etc.), the wooden tracks get the job done. A bit rougher hewn than the expensive store-bought tracks and a very small handful of duds, but the vast majority of pieces are quite good. Since these have the “ball” style connectors, the pieces ALWAYS fit together but the side effect is that the fit isn’t always the tightest. I prefer this style since there’s nothing more annoying that the carved connectors that are slightly off-size and are difficult to slide together (especially for small hands). I highly recommend this set as a cost-effective and quality way to expand your train track set — my daughter has never enjoyed her trains more than she does now that we have lots more fun tracks to ride on.

I ordered this 100pc. wooden track set for my son this Christmas to coordinate with his Thomas the Tank Engine stuff. For the most part, the tracks do work well with the name brand ones. Sometimes the holes or pegs are too big or small and lead to frustration in my 3yo engineer. In addition, some of the pegs have fallen out already (about 10, 1 mo later). I’m sure they can be fixed with some wood glue though. I was surprised that the tracks were mailed in just the one box, no packaging, no bag and no picture of what was inside. I suppose that’s good for the environment, right? Overall, he’s having a great time playing with them and loves the number and variety of tracks that came in the set.

I purchased this at Tuesday Morning for one dollar and 99 cents. It was well worth it! My son loves it! The little “Cole” inside is wooden but the train car is mostly plastic. By son is a train lover so for 1.99 we indulge him.

Brio is a durable brand but does have more plastic pieces that the Thomas and Friends brand that is mainly wooden. That is the only fall back for me. It pulls perfectly behind Thomas, Percy and Gordon. It is the same scale at the Thomas so they work beautifully together!

The car has a separate black insert that drops out when the wagon’s bed is tilted. My 3 yr. old likes putting the load in and taking it out. He also likes finding other things to put into the wagon, after taking out the original “load” piece. The design is simple and very sturdy, and likely to survive many years of use.

This engine is great fun … as long as you don’t use it on BRIO’s own train tracks. The locomotive is bright red, it toots and whistles and has two headlights that will brighten up your kid’s eyes. Unfortunately, it also needs lots of handholding, because it gets stuck quite often. In curves, especially going in reverse and up hills. The mighty red locomotive is a little too mighty and could use a slimming diet. I’m returning mine. A much better choice is the yellow engine which is also battery driven … and uses just one AAA battery.

Our family loves Brio. My husband has a huge collection form his youth. So when my 2 year old asked for a train for Christmas, we thought we would get him this starter track to later combine with my husband’s set. Beware, while this set seems cute, there is one, seemingly unneeded detail: there is a dog “accident” on the track. I read it on the box and could not believe it. So I openned it and yes, there is an artist rendering of dog poop on the tracks. Needless to say, we will be sanding that off before giving it to our 2-year old. Gross.
